Mind Maps are the New Corporate Strategy Tool

Corporations across the country are beginning to mind map. This highly effective diagramming method illustrates thoughts, concepts, relationships, associations, and consequences all connected to a central hub representing the main idea.

Unlike any other technique, mind mapping allows not only simultaneous organization of complex relationships, but also a concise, focused model of a central idea. Conventional outlines trap concepts in a rigidly linear vertical framework. Not all relationships are hierarchical and mind maps effectively acknowledge this fact.

Businesses are using mind maps to challenge their employees to think creatively without sacrificing order or organization. Brainstorming sessions result in outside-the-box solutions because mind mapping encourages people to approach a problem from every angle. Furthermore, the addition of a mind map's highly visual component helps foster better retention after the brainstorming session.
But a mind map's utility is not limited to facilitating highly effective brainstorming sessions. More and more often, they are appearing in corporate boardrooms. Mind maps are an excellent way to walk people through complex concepts. With a mind map, people clearly understand the specifics of an idea and easily see how it relates to the concept as a whole. That is why even high-level executives are including them in their presentations.

Be careful not to confuse mind maps and concept maps. On the one hand, mind maps show an idea in its totality. The branches and where they spring from the central hub are more or less arbitrary. The main goal being a complete visual representation of all facets contained within the main idea. A concept map, on the other hand, diagrams a process. The structure of a concept map, while multi-directional, relies on a strict hierarchy of progression, a burden mind maps are free from.

In the corporate world, getting your point across is crucial. Often times we only have one chance to make our pitch. That is why it is absolutely critical to be as prepared as possible. Creating a mind map to prepare for a meeting is a great way to approach an idea from every possible side and increase your understanding and fluency in the issue. Additionally, a slide of a well designed mind map (there are several software solutions for this) will keep you and your audience focused throughout the entire presentation.
